ASANTE!!

Welcome to the ASANTE PAPA! web site .

* ASANTE PAPA ! * is the title of Paul D. Hammersten's ground breaking book and tribute to the greatest writer in English since Shakespeare--ERNEST ' PAPA ' HEMINGWAY!!

ERNEST HEMINGWAY LOVED AFRICA.

One of the things that Papa Hemingway was working on before he died was a massive tome inspired by his last 8 month African safari. While creating what he called his " Africa Book ",Papa said he was writing "maybe better then I ever have". He worked over 2 years on the book, writing more than 200,000 words. He painstakingly reread and edited each page. Over two thirds of his finished draft was typed before he died.

From the very first sentence to his last deliberately incomplete sentence, Papa's " Africa Book " was to him of primary value and importance over all his other writings.

However, even while writing the book,Papa realized that because of its length and for other reasons best known to himself, his " Africa Book " would not be published until after his death. He believed that someday his family would publish his book.

After his death Papa's book of 850 gradually yellowing pages at first lanquished sealed in his steamer trunk. Now is son Patrick, who was with his father on the 1953 Kenya safari, has affectionately and worthily edited the manuscript for publication.

" MY NORTHERN CHEYENNE INDIAN ANGEL "

was what Papa called his son. Papa was proud to be 1/8th Northern Cheyenne. Patrick Hemingway has done a fine thing by resurrecting his father's " Africa Book ". With 320 pages he has given us Papa's latest and greatest book " TRUE AT FIRST LIGHT " .

ASANTE PAPA!

Asante means - thank you - in Swahili.

Papa means - Papa - in Swahili. Stuart Edward White the famed author of * Rediscovered Country *,the book about his 2 1/2 year safari through the last virgin game fields of East Africa with the famed elephant hunter R.J.Cunningham,wrote in * The Leopard Women * that," whether it has been translated from the English,or has been adopted more directly from the babbling of infants,' Papa ' is perfectly good Swahili. When an African leader in the old days addressed a white man as ' Papa ',he not only acknowledged him as a guest, but admitted him to the intimacy that exists between equals in rank ".

ASANTE!

for visiting the ASANTE PAPA! web site. The gift of an eagle feather Papa traded in Lame Deer,Montana on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation ( True At First Light pg. 207 - 211 ) to Paul D. Hammersten has led to the author's passionate tribute to Papa Hemingway and his work.

The ASANTE PAPA! web site, continuously evolving, will explore the genius of Ernest ' Papa ' Hemingway as revealed in his " Africa Book "," True At First Light ",and in " Asante Papa! " .

"THIS IS FOR YOU. MY FATHER MADE ' GOOD TRADE ' THAT DAY WITH ERNEST HEMINGWAY."

These words were spoken to Paul Hammersten by the uncle of John Red Breath on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in 1970.

JOHN RED BREATH IS THE DANCER SECOND FROM THE LEFT. THIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS TAKEN DURING THE NORTHERN CHEYENNE SUNDANCE OF 1959.

John Red Breath and Paul Hammersten took the river road out to the place Papa's good friend ' Coop '(Gary Cooper) had filmed " The Plainsman " back when John was a little boy.

They stopped at John's uncle's one room cabin nestled in a stand of cotton wood trees down by the River Of Tongues. His uncle took a dented silver metal suitcase out from under his bed. From the suitcase he removed a folded red bandana. He unwrapped the faded cotton cloth. Inside was a small eagle feather.

" It was no good thinking about ethics now and less good to think about Lame Deer where you sat on a mule deer hide in front of a teepee with your two eagle tails spread out with the under sides up so that the lovely white ends and the soft plumes showed and said nothing while they were looked at and held your tongue in the bargaining.
